Bosnia and Herzegovina – CMS Party No. 126

 

Bonn, 1 December 2017 - CMS is pleased to welcome Bosnia and Herzegovina as the 126th Party to the Convention with effect from today.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is situated in the Balkan Peninsula with borders to Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro and a coastline of 20 km on the Adriatic.  The central and eastern parts of the country are mountainous, the north-west is hilly while the north-east is generally flat.   Most of the country has a continental climate but in the far south it is more Mediterranean.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Range State for many migratory species listed under both Appendix I and II of the Convention, including the Common Dolphin Delphinus delphis, the Bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatusalong with various bat species such as Schreiber's Bent-winged Bat Miniopterus schreibersii, Bechstein's Bat Myotis bechsteini, as well as Long-fingered Bat Myotis capaccinii and Whiskered Bat Myotis mystacinus.

Many migratory birds pass through Bosnia and Herzegovina, including some listed on CMS Appendix I such as the Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola, the Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca, Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni, White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla, Slender-billed Curlew Numenius tenuirostris, Great Bustard Otis tarda,and two pelican species, the Dalmatian Pelecanus crispus and the White Pelecanus onocrotalus.  Appendix II bird species found in the country include the Common Crane Grus grus, the Mute Swan Cygnus olor, the Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons and the Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus.

Other CMS instruments and initiatives of which Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Range State include the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), EUROBATS and ACCOBAMS and the Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on the Aquatic Warbler, the Middle-European Populations of the Great Bustard, the Slender-billed Curlew, Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia and Migratory Sharks.

With the accession of Bosnia and Herzegovina the number of Parties to CMS from the European region has reached 44 – the same number as Africa – leaving very few gaps in Europe.
