Le premier accord portant spécifiquement sur la conservation des gorilles et de leurs habitats dans les dix États de l’aire de répartition est entré en vigueur en 2008. L’Accord Gorilla fournit aux gouvernements, aux ONG, aux scientifiques, aux populations locales et à la communauté internationale dans son ensemble un cadre juridiquement contraignant pour maintenir et de restaurer les populations de gorilles et leurs habitats. La CMS travaille en étroite collaboration avec le Partenariat du PNUE pour la survie des grands singes (GRASP - Great Apes Survival Partnership) et bénéficie également d’autres partenariats, notamment avec la CITES et avec le Groupe de spécialistes des primates de la Commission de sauvegarde des espèces (SSC - Species Survival Commission) de l’UICN.
De nombreuses populations de gorilles vivent dans des régions transfrontalières, et une grande part de la réussite des efforts de conservation dépend de la coopération internationale. Prenant en compte ces besoins, l’Accord Gorilla a été développé sous l’égide de la CMS et a été ouvert à la signature à Paris en 2007.
Les gorilles sont les plus grands des grands singes et jouent un rôle écologique essentiel dans les forêts d’Afrique centrale. Malgré leurs valeurs économiques, culturelles et esthétiques considérables pour beaucoup de gens à travers le monde, l’avenir des gorilles est loin d’être assuré. Les principales menaces sont la dégradation et la perte de leurs habitats en raison de l’exploitation minière, de l’exploitation forestière et de l’agriculture, ainsi que le braconnage et les maladies, notamment le virus Ébola. Ces facteurs sont exacerbés par les conflits et la faible gouvernance dans la plupart des zones où les gorilles survivent.
Il existe deux espèces de gorilles reconnues par la CMS : le gorille de l’Ouest et le gorille de l’Est. Elles sont séparées géographiquement par plus de 1000 km et comprennent chacune deux sous-espèces. Les menaces et les besoins de conservation varient considérablement en fonction des sous-espèces. C’est pourquoi un plan d’action est élaboré pour chaque sous-espèce en vertu de l’Accord Gorilla. Les nouveaux plans d’action seront adoptés par l’Accord au fur et à mesure de leur production par la communauté scientifique internationale, et notamment par le Groupe UICN/SSC de spécialistes des primates.
