Giraffe Experts Meeting

Description:

Giraffes were listed on Appendix II by the CMS Conference of the Parties (COP12) in Manila in 2017. This means that Range States should cooperate on conservation measures for the Giraffe. One of the most cost effective and fastest possibilities to initiate cooperation between Range States would be through a Concerted Action, as per Resolution 12.28.

In accordance with Resolution 12.28, the Secretariat is supporting Range State Parties to develop such a Concerted Action in cooperation with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The Concerted Action will be developed during the course of an expert meeting, taking place in Windhoek, Namibia from 9 to 11 July 2019. Following the expert meeting and prior to the submission deadline of COP13 on 19 September 2019, the Secretariat will circulate the draft Concerted Action to all CMS Party Range States for consultation.

Participation in the expert meeting is only possible upon personal invitation. As funds are limited, CMS is only in a position to cover the participation of a number of Range States with transboundary Giraffe populations. If these representatives are unable to join the meeting, an invitation can be extended to other Range States. In addition, the Secretariat is not in a position to fund participation of CMS Parties that have submitted reservations to the listing of Giraffes.

The meeting will be in English only.

The meeting has been made possible through the kind financial support of Finland, Monaco and the Netherlands and is being generously hosted by the Government of Namibia.
