Bonn, 25 January 2017 – the next meeting of the CMS Climate Change Working Group is taking place in Bonn, Germany from 20 to 21 February.

The CMS Climate Change Working Group, established under the CMS Scientific Council, has the task of reviewing the impact of climate change on migratory species, and of identifying and prioritizing options for intervention.

Resolution 11.26, adopted by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention in 2014 included a “Programme of Work (POW) on Climate Change and Migratory Species”. The Parties and other stakeholders should implement the actions contained in this Programme of Work according to their individual circumstances with a view to maximizing the benefits to migratory species. The Climate Change Working Group is expected to help oversee and coordinate this work and in particular to identify priorities and to facilitate knowledge exchange.

The main objectives of the meeting are to collate examples of what is the actual status of impact to migratory species with discussions of key examples of species listed on CMS Appendices; the identification and promotion of practical measures (inter alia examples of good practice); the development of a regional approach, and the operationalization of selected activities included in the Programme of Work (PoW).

The results of the meeting will be considered by the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council at its 2nd meeting in July 2017, and by the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS, taking place in October 2017 in the Philippines. The outcomes will also be brought to the attention of other relevant institutions including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

This meeting has been kindly funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB)
