Description:

The Third Meeting of the Multi-Stakeholder Task Force on Reconciling Selected Energy Sector Developments with Migratory Species Conservation (Energy Task Force, ETF) is scheduled to be held on 16 November 2018 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in the margins of UN Biodiversity Conference – the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14).

The 2017 meeting of the ETF developed a Work Plan for the period 2018-2020 including a detailed Outreach Plan, based on the Terms of Reference of the Energy Task Force (Work Plan 2018-2020). It also identified priorities for research and future work of the Energy Task Force, and opportunities for cooperation.

The 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS (October 2017) agreed on a number of Decisions relevant and directed to the Energy Task Force. In addition, the Global Flyways Summit in April 2018 identified a key role of the Energy Task Force in mainstreaming flyway conservation with energy infrastructure developments. A number of activities have been undertaken under the new coordination of the ETF, and new topics and opportunities for cooperation and action have emerged. In this context, the Third Meeting of the ETF is expected to assess progress in and provide guidance towards the implementation of the Work Plan, including any adjustment as needed, and to agree on documents and materials to be produced, to identify ETF flagship projects with impact on the ground, and to discuss input to be submitted to the 13th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to CMS.

Furthermore, the High-Level Segment and the Business and Biodiversity Forumof the CBD COP14 will take place on 14-15 November 2018 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, around the theme of “Investing in Biodiversity for People and Planet”, covering the sectors of energy and mining, infrastructure, manufacturing and processing, and health, in the broader context of sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting of the ETF matches perfectly with the topic of the High-Level Segment and will be an opportunity for participants to showcase examples of good practice in reconciling energy and biodiversity conservation and demonstrating how the SDGs can be implemented on the ground by a variety of partners and stakeholders.
